How to Use the SimLab SolidWorks Importer for SketchUp The SimLab SolidWorks Importer for SketchUp is a dedicated plugin designed to bridge the gap between parametric CAD design and intuitive 3D modeling. It allows professionals to import native SolidWorks parts (.sldpart) and assemblies (.sldasm) directly into SketchUp without losing structural metadata, scaling alignment, or underlying texture placements. Step 1: Download and Installation
Before importing files, you must install the extension into your SketchUp workspace.
Open SketchUp and navigate to Extensions > Extension Warehouse. Search for “SimLab SolidWorks Importer”.
Download and install the plugin version compatible with your operating system (Windows or macOS).
Restart SketchUp to fully initialize the newly added scripts.
Find the new options located under the top menu header Extensions > SimLab SolidWorks Importer.
Note: Initial installations automatically activate a 14-day trial period allowing up to 30 individual imports before requiring a professional activation key. Step 2: Configure the Import Settings
To maintain model accuracy, configure your spatial parameters before opening any heavy assemblies. Navigate to Extensions > SimLab SolidWorks Importer > Settings to change the default behaviors:
Scale Adjustments: Uncheck “Auto Scale Imported Model” if you require exact manufacturing dimensions. Check it if you only need the asset to fill a visual slot in an architectural scene.
Orientation Controls: Adjust the “Up Vector” or add a default rotation value. This prevents models built on different coordinate planes from importing sideways.
Materials Support: Keep the “Import Materials” option checked. This guarantees that colors and embedded textures transfer perfectly along with the geometry. Step 3: Importing your SolidWorks File
Once settings are finalized, you can pull your CAD designs directly into your active SketchUp canvas. SolidWorks importer for SketchUp – Simlab 3D Plugins
